Common questions

Questions we hear from Montana customers

Are your candles safe for pets?

Yes. The Beartooth Homestead candles burn on 100% soy wax and essential oils only: no fragrance oils, no synthetic additives. Most candle-related pet reactions come from fragrance oils and paraffin, and neither is in our candles. If your pet has had a reaction to candles in the past, the product they reacted to almost certainly contained one or both.

What does "100% soy" actually mean?

It means the wax base is entirely soybean-derived: no paraffin blends, no additives extended into the formula. Soy burns cleaner and longer than paraffin, and when combined with essential oils instead of synthetic fragrance, the result is a candle with no hidden chemicals. Many candles labeled "soy" are still soy-paraffin blends. Ours are not.

Where do the sheep come from?

Our flock is raised here on the homestead in Billings, Montana. The sheep are Targhee and Targhee/Rambouillet crosses, breeds selected for fine, soft fiber with good staple length. Each animal is individually named. When you buy wool roving from The Beartooth Homestead, you know whose fleece it is: Daffodil, Dahlia, Daisy, Mabel, or Sally.

How is the wool processed and tested?

After shearing, the raw fleece goes to a local mill in Belgrade, Montana, where it is washed, cleaned, and carded into roving. Each lot is then tested by the Montana Wool Lab at Montana State University following ASTM Testing Procedure D6500 using an OFDA 2000 instrument. The test report tells you the micron average, comfort factor, staple length, and standard deviation: everything a hand spinner, weaver, or fiber artist needs to choose the right fleece for a project.
